You don’t think twice; the voice is spot on. But here’s the twist: it’s not your CEO. It’s a deepfake.
It sounds like something out of a sci-fi thriller. Unfortunately, this scenario is already playing out in real life, catching seasoned professionals off guard. Deepfake technology is evolving fast, quietly becoming one of the most dangerous tools in a cybercriminal’s arsenal.
Deepfake technology uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to create fake but incredibly realistic images, videos, and even voices. These aren’t your average Photoshop edits. We’re talking about AI-generated content that can mimic facial expressions, replicate someone’s speech patterns, and simulate behavior so convincingly that even trained professionals get fooled.
Initially, deepfakes had creative and educational uses, like enhancing CGI in movies, assisting speech-impaired individuals with AI-generated voices, or recreating historical scenes for immersive learning, but like many technologies, deepfakes have a dark side.
According to the 2024 Identity Fraud Report, a deepfake attack occurs every five minutes, and digital document forgeries rose by 244% year over year. Financial services are among the top targets with their treasure troves of sensitive data.

Vet Your Vendors:A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Ensure your partners and vendors are following deepfake mitigation practices, too.
